On Saturday, January 7th, the Schomberg Novice LL Red Wings traveled to Woodville, ON for their first tournament of the season. Three thrilling matches were played which took the team to a Gold Cup finish in the Consolation Championship Game. Making his Novice debut, Adam Dow was called up from the younger Tyke Division. He contributed with a solid performance while playing on the same line as his sister, Assistant Captain Alicia Dow.
In game one, the Schomberg Red Wings faced local rivals and league leaders, Thornton. Lucas Tribe made his debut as a goalkeeper and was kept busy with 14 shots on net. Schomberg scored first but then quickly found themselves down by two as Thornton fought back to take a 3-1 lead. Our Red Wings never gave up and rallied to take back the lead with two minutes left in the game. Braedon Connor thrilled the spectators with his new, back-hand, puck deking skills. Thornton tied it up with only seconds to spare and the game went to a “sudden death”, 4-on-4 overtime. This was followed by one minute of 3-on-3. Thornton took the win with a goal scored seconds before the overtime ended. Spectators could not have asked for a more exciting game to watch!
In game two against Manvers, the coaches spiced things up by reversing the offense lines with the defense lines. The game remained scoreless in the first period but the Red Wing’s momentum picked up as the players settled in to their new positions. Sydne Maksymiu scored her first career goal assisted by Sarah Forrest with her first career assist. Lorne Peelar continued his delivery of brilliant goal keeping. Keagen Sanchez-Meredith stood out as a powerhouse defender. Schomberg eventually won the game, 4-1.
In game three, the Red Wings faced the hometown Woodville Hurricanes. Despite the hometown advantage, Schomberg dominated the Hurricanes from the start. Sammy Matukas, Liam Megraw and Seth Mariotti lead the team playing with hustle and passion. Our Red Wings charged to a 6-0 victory to take the Consolation Championship. Goalkeeper, Russell Priestly, had his third shutout of the season.
Woodville were gracious and organized hosts. Eight Ontario teams and their families enjoyed a great day of hockey!
