Re: Ensuring Safe Return to Play and Baseline Concussion Testing
Like all Minor Hockey Parents, the SMHA Executive is committed to providing a safe and healthy playing environment for all children involved in our Association. Increasingly, news reports have focused on the risk of head injuries in many sporting activities, with a recent emphasis on hockey, and in particular, hockey at the older age ranges where physical contact is allowed.
Code of Conduct Reminder: It is important that all Members of SMHA, including Coaches, Parents, Players and Spectators commit themselves to ensuring that hockey remains fun, with a focus on skill development, respectful competition and good sportsmanship. With those goals in mind, all members should ensure that they review and abide by the SMHA Code of Ethics, as it applies to Parents, Players & Spectators (see Risk Management for a copy).
As a useful reminder of the courtesy and respect that each of us are expected to show towards minor hockey officials, players and fellow parents, please see the Magic Hockey Helmet video below
Sometimes it takes the words of a 9 year old to put everything into perspective.

Police Background Checks **UPDATED - See Below**
As a reminder, OMHA policy requires all Team Officials, including Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Trainers and Managers, to provide a Criminal Background Check as a condition of volunteering to work with children.
While some consider this to be a technicality, SMHA fully supports the OMHA’s Policy on Criminal Record Checks, as this important requirement helps to provide a safe and secure environment for SMHA families and players. A copy of the applicable OMHA Policy is available in the Risk Management Section of our website.
